Summary
This publication is intended to provide information to families, clinicians, administrators, policymakers and others seeking information about evidence-based practices for child and adolescent mental health disorders. The revised Collection has categories that represent different levels of scientific support for a particular treatment: 1. What Works, 2. What Seems to Work, 3. What Does Not Work, 4. Not Adequately Tested, and 5. Not Tested. Because research is ongoing, treatments are expected to move around among the categories with time. The Collection 4th Edition also includes information on assessment in order to emphasize that all clinical decisions should be made in consultation with the data.

Summary
In collaboration with several community partners, the University of Texas Medical Branch provides remote mental health assessment and treatment services via videoconferencing technology and onsite case management to low-income, minority, and other students and parents in four school-based primary care clinics in the Galveston Independent School District. The program's goal is to improve student mental health status and behavior, which is expected to lead to a reduction in student absenteeism, drug use, and violent behavior in the schools.

Summary
A collaborative partnership between Phoenix Children’s Hospital, HomeBase Youth Services, and Children’s Health Fund, Crews’n Healthmobile Homeless Youth Program operates a free-standing clinic and a mobile medical unit that provide hope and holistic health care to Arizona's homeless and at-risk youth and young families. Preventive and comprehensive services include medical, health education, and mental health services at numerous sites where homeless and other at-risk youth gather in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Through partnerships with community agencies, the clinic also provides referrals for needed followup services, including medical and dental care and social services. Regular program participants utilize the emergency department less frequently and are more likely to receive followup care, while both patients and providers report high levels of satisfaction with the program.

Summary
Pediatricians are in a unique position to identify early childhood mental health concerns and family mental health and substance abuse risk factors. This SAMHSA, funded, web-based resource features eight innovative medical home practices that integrate behavioral health screening for the whole family, facilitate referrals to community services, and offer follow-up care. This resource describes how the practices use very different approaches to do it, fund it, and the lessons they learned.
RWJF, Grant Results for Motivational Interviewing for Adolescent Smokers in an Emergency Department, Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies (Providence, RI), 2008. Summary From 1997 through 1999, researchers at the Brown University Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, Providence, R.I., carried out a pilot study to examine the efficacy of a motivational interviewing intervention for adolescent smokers. The adolescents were randomly assigned to either the motivational interviewing intervention or a brief advice intervention. The 45-minute motivational interviewing intervention used a no confrontational approach that gave the adolescents personalized feedback on the physical, social, and economic effects of their smoking. Adolescents who received the five-minute brief advice intervention were given firm advice to quit smoking as soon as possible and provided self-help materials. Key Findings

Summary
Project Venture is an outdoor experiential youth development program designed to prevent substance abuse and related problems among American Indian youth, including high-risk youth. The program relies on traditional American Indian values to promote the development of a positive conception of one’s self, effective social interaction skills, a community service ethic, an internal locus of control, and good decisionmaking and problem-solving skills. This nationally recognized program has led to significant reductions in substance use by participants and their peers, as well as improvements in participants’ attitudes and behaviors.

Abstract
In response to a request for technical assistance from the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), the Illinois Models for Change initiative assembled a team of mental health and corrections experts to evaluate the department’s behavioral health policies, practices and programming. This assessment of DJJ’s behavioral health program is based primarily on a series of site visits to the department’s eight facilities. Given the geographic diversity of the facilities and the expedited timetable for completion of the assessment, this report would not have been possible without the full cooperation of DJJ’s management team. The assessment team would also like to thank DJJ’s staff members and the youth who agreed to be interviewed for the assessment. Their experiences and perspectives helped inform team members’ understanding of DJJ’s current behavioral health programming and areas of future.
