What is The Practical Leadership Model?
The Practical Leadership Model is an action model of leadership based on six core leadership functions which are essential for achieving sustainable excellence in any organization or initiative. By executing these functions every day you can elevate your leadership influence and increase your chances of success. Why was The Practical Leadership Model developed?
We developed The Practical Leadership Model to fill what we perceived to be a void in field. In serving our clients we learned that they need to develop a full spectrum of leadership capabilities, from strategy to execution. Looking in the field for books and resources to share with our clients, we found few that covered the spectrum from strategy to execution in a way that resonated with the folks we serve - especially our clients in nonprofits, government, and community-oriented businesses. Consequently, we found ourselves recommending multiple models and trying to cobble them together into a coherent whole. After a time, we decided to develop our own model.
How was The Practical Leadership Model developed?
The Practical Leadership Model was developed through an extensive process of research and development on 'what works' in leadership. We began with an exhaustive review of the literature. From this we developed a list of more than 400 recommended leadership practices. After accounting for overlap and duplication, we culled the list down to several dozen leadership practices which appeared to be evidence-based and widely recommended by proven leadership practitioners and researchers. We tested the list with hundreds of our own clients and survey respondents, and came out with the six strategies and 30 practices that form the model.
How does The Practical Leadership Model compare to the popular models on the market?
We are blessed today to have a set of leadership classics readily available on the market. From The Leadership Challenge to Good to Great, from John Maxwell to Steven Covey, there are too many great leadership books and models to mention all of them here. The Practical Leadership Model is aligned with most all of the classic leadership models in use today. The difference is that The Practical Leadership Model encompasses the leadership spectrum from strategy to execution in one straightforward action model which can be applied in the business, government, and nonprofit sectors.
Does The Practical Leadership Model really cover everything a leader needs?
We do not contend that The Practical Leadership Model includes everything you should be, know, and do as a leader. That's why we include a wealth of additional leadership resources on this website. But we do propose that every leader should be doing the things in The Practical Leadership Model on an everyday basis. Click any link to get started.
