2011 has been a tumultuous year as healthcare organizations get to grips with value-based purchasing, rules for ACOs, meaningful use, and financial upheaval. Did we meet Healthy People 2010 goals?

The results of the progress made on the goals for Healthy People 2010 is vital for nurse leaders. The CDC recently announced that the nation met or made toward 71% of the goals for Healthy People 2010. Average life expectancy increased by 1 year and death rates declined in many of the program's focus areas. However, health disparities decreased for only 7% of the program's objectives and obesity rates increased across all age groups.

Measures Applications Partnership Issues Final Report

The Measures Applications Partnership (MAP) final report, "Coordination Strategy for Healthcare-Acquired Conditions and Readmissions Across Public and Private Payers" has valuable content for nurse managers/leaders.  The  report includes the following three recommendations:

1) We need a national core set of safety measures that are applicable to all patients;

2) We need to collect data elements necessary for calculating the measures in the safety core set on all patients, regardless of care setting, age, or who pays their healthcare bills; and

3) We need to help public- and private-sector entities coordinate their efforts to make care safer, shared “carrots” or incentives are key.

Predictors of Registered Nurses' Willingness to Remain in Nursing

The evolving nursing shortage in the United States and globally is a subject of considerable attention from researchers, the health care industry, higher education, and policy makers, both at the federal and state levels. Unlike past shortages, this one involves both the demand and supply parts of the equation. Consequently, multiple strategies must be put into place to offset the projected shortage of over 260,000 registered nurses (RNs) in 2025 (Buerhaus, Auerbach, & Staiger, 2009).

Implementing the IOM Future of Nursing Report: Part I

In October 2010, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) jointly released The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, calling it a blueprint for transforming the American health system by strengthening nursing care and better preparing nurses to help lead reform.

RWJF has begun a four-part miniseries on the report and the first issue focuses on how to dramatically increase the formal education of America's nursing workforce by 2020.

Nurse-Led Weekly Educational Program for Children Focuses on Physical Activity and Food Choices, Leading to Healthier Behaviors, Lower Body Mass Index

The Kids Living Fit™ program is a hospital-based community program that can be implemented either in schools or hospitals to educate children, including those who are overweight (or at risk for overweight), about healthy lifestyle choices regarding fitness and nutrition. The program consists of a series of 8 to 12 weekly sessions that expose children to a variety of physical activities that can be pursued independently and to provide information about healthy food choices. Two pilot studies and a prospective comparative study show that the program has led to reductions in body mass index and waist circumference and to increases in physical activity.

Center for Transforming Healthcare Aims to Reduce the Risk of Wrong Site Surgery

Health care professionals, nurse leaders, and patients all agree that wrong site surgery is a serious and preventable adverse event that should never happen. Although reporting is not mandatory in most states, some estimates put the national incidence rate, which includes wrong patient, wrong procedure, wrong site, and wrong side surgeries, as high as 40 per week. Recognizing this as a critical patient safety issue, eight U.S. hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers teamed up with the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare to address the problem.
